How To Teach Your Puppy To Down
Teaching your dog to lay down (or “lie down”) is a useful command that can help with relaxation, obedience, and impulse control. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Get Your Dog’s Attention
- Start in a quiet, distraction-free environment.
- Have your dog sit first if they know that command.
- Use treats or a favorite toy as motivation.
Step 2: Lure Your Dog into the Down Position
- Hold a treat close to their nose.
- Slowly lower the treat to the ground between their front paws.
- Move the treat slightly forward so they stretch out to follow it.
- As soon as their elbows and belly touch the floor, reward them with the treat and praise them (“Good down!”).
Step 3: Use a Verbal Cue
- Once your dog starts understanding the motion, introduce a verbal command like “Down” or “Lay Down” just before you lure them.
- Repeat several times until they associate the word with the action.
Step 4: Reduce the Lure
- Gradually phase out the treat by using only your hand signal.
- Reward them only after they successfully lie down on command.
Step 5: Practice & Reinforce
- Practice in different locations with more distractions.
- Reward them randomly to reinforce the behavior.
- Avoid forcing them into position—let them learn at their own pace.
Bonus Tips
✔️ Use a calm tone to encourage relaxation.
✔️ Practice after playtime when they’re more likely to want to rest.
✔️ If they don’t respond, try training on a softer surface like a carpet.
