Training Your Puppy To Reliably Come To You
Training your puppy to reliably come when called (also known as “recall”) is one of the most important commands for their safety and your peace of mind. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a strong recall response:
1. Start with the Basics
- Choose a specific cue word like “Come,” “Here,” or your puppy’s name. Be consistent.
- Train in a low-distraction environment (like inside your home) before advancing to more challenging settings.
2. Use Positive Reinforcement
- Always reward your puppy for coming when called. Use high-value treats, praise, or a favorite toy.
- Make coming to you a fun and rewarding experience.
3. Begin with Short Distances
- Start with your puppy a few feet away. Call their name in a happy tone and use the cue word.
- When they come, immediately reward them with treats and affection.
4. Use Movement & Excitement
- If your puppy hesitates, try crouching down or running a few steps backward. Dogs love to chase!
- Use an enthusiastic tone to make recall engaging.
5. Increase Distance & Distractions Gradually
- Once your puppy reliably comes inside the house, practice in a fenced yard or on a long leash.
- Gradually introduce distractions (other dogs, noises, people) while maintaining rewards.
6. Never Punish When They Come
- Even if your puppy takes time or gets distracted, never scold them when they finally return. This will create a negative association.
- Instead, praise them for coming, even if it wasn’t immediate.
7. Play Recall Games
- Hide and Seek: Hide and call your puppy to find you.
- Chase Me: Run away a short distance and call your puppy.
- Round-Robin Recall: Have multiple family members call the puppy from different locations and reward them each time they come.
8. Practice Often & Keep It Fun
- Practice recall in short sessions daily.
- Always end on a positive note, leaving your puppy excited for the next training.
9. Use a Long Leash for Off-Leash Training
- When transitioning to off-leash recall, use a long training leash in open areas.
- Call your puppy and gently guide them if needed, rewarding when they come.
10. Phase Out Treats Gradually
- Once your puppy is consistently responding, slowly reduce the frequency of treats while maintaining occasional rewards and praise.
By being patient, consistent, and making recall fun, you’ll have a puppy that reliably comes when called—even in distracting environments! 🚀🐶
